The Chi Rho cross is a monogram of the first two letters of the name of Jesus in Greek and was used as a symbol of the Christian church as early as the 2nd century. In 312AD, before the Battle of Milvian Bridge, Emperor Constantine I of Rome claims to have seen the Chi Rho sign in the sky under the Greek words "Ἐν Τούτῳ Νίκα," which translate into the Latin "In hoc signo vinces," or the English, "By this sign, conquer."

He would emblazon this symbol on the shields and banners of his army and, though it is doubtful he ever truly gave his life to Jesus, those around him would unequivocally attribute their following victory to the favor of the Lord. Whether his conversion was ever genuine or not, the sign does mirror the words Paul would write two centuries earlier in his letter to the Romans: "In all things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.”
